Vaccini, the bar is raised: target 90% of Italians immunized. Virologists: "Third dose for everyone"

44.4 million people have completed the vaccination cycle, 82.22% of the population over 12, while 86.06% have done at least one dose. But in the face of the rise in infections , experts raise the bar : in order to definitively stem the Covid pandemic, 90% of immunized Italians must be reached.
This was stated by the Director of Prevention of the Ministry of Health, Gianni Rezza. And the sprint on third doses also goes in this direction. If for the coordinator of the CTS Franco Locatelli it will come "later in time" to consider a third dose also for the youngest, the president of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro, goes further: extending it to the entire population " it's a likely scenario ".
In the meantime, reaching nine out of ten Italians with a double dose does not seem too far a goal, were it not for the fact that at this point there are fewer and fewer new vaccinates: still 7.6 million Italians over 12 who "resist" and have not even done so. one dose. Even the boost that was hoped to be given by the vaccination obligation in the workplace has been rather disappointing or is in any case wearing out its effects.
The new vaccinated this Sunday were about 10 thousand, the previous Sunday had been almost 29 thousand, and the previous Sunday 26 thousand.
THIRD DOSES - Meanwhile, the third inoculations exceed one million, between "additional dose", administered to fragile subjects, and "booster", that is the further recall to the over 60s. J&J but on this we await the indications of the EMA. Since "the protection after 6 months drops significantly", according to the microbiologist Andrea Crisanti, vulnerable people and health personnel should take the third dose "as soon as possible" but, he warns, "if we don't want to happen what we are seeing in Great Britain, the third dose of vaccine should be done by everyone ".
"We still have time to decide" on young people, says Rezza: "After all, most began the vaccination cycle close to the summer and six months have not passed for the further recall". "
The hypothesis of protecting children under 12 is also evaluated: "Having vaccination for children between 5 and 11 years - observes Professor Matteo Bassetti - would mean protecting the entire range of students who attend school, from elementary to middle school ". These vaccines, he specified, are "as safe as other mandatory" and perhaps "even more".
