"I've always said that we need to use different language to avoid inflaming tempers. Today, the level of security for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Vice President Matteo Salvini, and myself was raised, so it means the climate isn't the best. I , however, urge everyone to tone it down. I haven't offended anyone today either." Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said this to reporters at the end of question time in the Senate.
His comment concerns the decision to raise the level of protection for the three government leaders to "exceptional," which entails deploying two or three armored vehicles with three officers in each. By decision of those directly involved, Meloni, Tajani, and Salvini had opted for a second-level escort since the beginning of the legislature. This solution is now deemed insufficient by the security apparatus following Kirk's assassination.
Yesterday, the prime minister and her two deputies appeared in public, on a stage, surrounded by a visibly more robust security detail than usual. At least six officers were escorting Meloni. A seventh carried a black briefcase containing a bulletproof sheet, ready for any eventuality.
