" It wasn't supposed to happen ."

These are the first few words of Alessandro Maja , the 57-year-old man arrested for the massacre in the family house in Samarate (Varese).

The man hammered to death his wife Stefania and daughter Giulia aged 16 , and seriously injured his eldest son Nicolò aged 23.

" I don't understand how such a thing could have happened, it shouldn't have happened ," he told his trusted lawyer Enrico Milani from the bed in the psychiatry ward of the Monza hospital where he is hospitalized and guarded.

The man, explained the lawyer, remains sedated and is undergoing a series of psychic tests. He spent only 24 hours in the Monza prison, before being taken to hospital: "The doctors felt that his condition was not compatible with his detention ," the lawyer said .

“It was not possible to have a complete interview with Maja, given her conditions”, Milani explained. The man " did not attempt to harm himself in prison, also because as soon as he arrived he was immediately declared incompatible with detention ". As for the interrogation, "it will be fixed only when Maja is declared suitable by the doctors".
