"The virological tests performed at the reference laboratory at Milan's Sacco Hospital have returned negative results. The patients also tested negative for malaria and the main respiratory viruses currently being monitored." This was announced by Guido Bertolaso, Lombardy's Regional Councilor for Welfare, regarding the two aid workers hospitalized in the Lombardy capital with symptoms consistent with Ebola virus infection.

The current hypothesis is "a bacterial infection affecting the gastrointestinal tract." The two aid workers recently returned from Uganda.
