"It was me". The 40-year-old from Torre del Greco (Naples) confessed that last night she killed her two and a half year old son because she was convinced that he was suffering from mental retardation problems, although this theory had not so far been confirmed from a health point of view.

The woman also confirmed the reasons for the atrocious gesture to the investigators.

The terrible turning point in the investigation into the death of the child drowned in the waters in front of the Scala area came in the early afternoon when the mother was stopped by the Torre Annunziata prosecutor on charges of voluntary homicide.

There was no medical confirmation, according to the Prosecutor's Office, that the little boy was suffering from mental retardation problems.

The tragedy took place last night near the port area of the Vesuvian city. The child was noticed in the water by some present, who intervened to stop a woman - the mother in fact - who was threatening to commit suicide.

Having seen the child, some present dived into the water, recovered him and brought him ashore. But it was already too late, all the help proved useless.

When they returned to the beach they tried to help the woman too: "She was in an evident state of shock and mumbled something, said she had been robbed by a foreign person", the story of the people who intervened in an attempt to save the child.

Shortly before, the woman's husband had already reported to the police the removal of his wife from home, around 9 pm.

The 40-year-old was listened to for a long time by the carabinieri of Torre del Greco, who also heard her husband. The two, in addition to the two and a half year old child, also have another seven year old daughter. After the interrogations, the prosecutor issued a detention order against the woman. Then the confession, the 40-year-old was conducted in the women's prison in Pozzuoli.
