Alex Zanardi has returned home and will spend the holidays with his family.

This was announced by Luca Pancalli, president of the Olympic Committee, at the opening of the ceremony for the delivery of the Gold Collars at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, reporting what was said by the wife of the Paralympic champion Daniela Manni on the BMW website of which Zanardi is a brand ambassador.

"There is an exceptional warmth around Alex - he explained - and for this reason we thought it right to share this good news. At the same time we ask you to respect our privacy. Because our only priority is to accompany Alex on his journey with all our power".

The 50-year-old former rider was the victim of a serious accident in June 2020 : during a handbike race in the province of Siena he was hit by a truck. In the impact he had suffered a head injury.

“RECOVERY STILL LONG” - A year and a half later he left the hospital and will continue his rehabilitation partly from home. But full recovery, his wife added, "continues to be a long process."

"The setbacks are there, the recovery path is still long and predictions cannot be made. But Alex repeatedly proves to be a real fighter." "For him it is a lot to return to his family and his family environment. For a year and a half he has only seen me, our son and his mother. Now being with the family will give him even more strength."

"Wonderful news is the strength of sport", commented the president of Coni, Giovanni Malagò, and the undersecretary for sport, Valentina Vezzali.
