Thousands of sea creatures, mostly crustaceans, found dead along the beaches of north-east England, a mystery the authorities want to see clearly.

A Marske-by-the-Sea citizen reported to CNN the presence of tons of seaweed piled up on the beach up to waist height, mixed with thousands of dead crabs and other crustaceans.

After a few days the piles of crabs began to decompose and the smell became unbearable. The UK Environment Agency said it is working with the Environment Center and the Coastal Fisheries Conservation Authority to understand the reasons for the phenomenon. "Samples of water, sediments, mussels and crabs were collected" sent to the laboratories for analysis. To be ascertained whether "a pollution accident may have contributed to the death of the animals" said the spokesman for the Environment Agency.
