The hypothesis of an "Olympic truce" is gaining ground in Ukraine on the occasion of the Paris Summer Games in July.
Emmanuel Macron put it forward and Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke about it yesterday , as the Tsar himself admitted: «We have discussed this topic, the principles of the Olympic Movement are right but the IOC is violating them by excluding Russia from competitions."
In short, Putin defined " the principles of Olympism as absolutely correct ", but harshly criticized the behavior of "international sports officials who are violating these principles and the fundamental nature of the Olympic Charter. They are politicizing sport and this is unacceptable ."
The hypothesis still stands, but Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky roundly rejects it. « We are against any truce that plays into the enemy's hands. No one can guarantee that Russia will not take the opportunity to bring its forces onto our territory ." Zelensky also criticizes the West for prohibiting Ukraine from using weapons supplied by Europe and the United States to strike Russian territory: "They can strike us from their territory, this is the biggest advantage, and we can't do anything."
