Chaos in Sri Lanka , where the population is in revolt against the government and against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa .

In the capital Colombo , thousands of people have attacked the presidential residence in these hours , exasperated by the serious economic crisis that is spreading over the Asian island, a former British colony with the name of Ceylon and an independent state since 1948, where over 21 million inhabitants reside.

Rajapaksa, 72, in power since 2019, was forced to flee, escorted by the army , while his home was ransacked and then set on fire .

Prime Minister Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has resigned , is also being targeted, with parties preparing to form a new national unity executive to try to solve the country's problems.

The president and his entourage are accused of being responsible for the recession in which the country has plunged, for the increase in inflation which in recent months has led to the rise in prices and the shortage of food, drugs and fuel .

A catastrophic situation, which has been going on for months. Suffice it to say that in April the default on foreign debt amounted to 51 billion dollars, with the government forced to ask for a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
