With a record majority, the Plenary meeting in Strasbourg re-elected Roberta Metsola President of the European Parliament. The Maltese MEP will lead the European Chamber for the next two and a half years.

Metsola was confirmed with 562 yes votes out of 699 voters. A very long round of applause greeted the outcome. The other candidate, Irene Montero, received 61 preferences.

«Thank you for your trust. It will be a parliament for everyone in Europe, to respect the promises of the founding fathers", said Metsola. «I am convinced that ours is a Europe for all, including lessons from the lessons of the past and ideals that have not disappeared».

The vote for the confirmation of Roberta Metsola united the Italian government majority. FI, like the EPP, voted for Metsola's encore, which also received the preferences of a "large majority" of ECR, including Melonians. The League, parliamentary sources say, voted in favor of Metsola even though the Patriots are in opposition. The yes from the Democratic Party and the S&D group was expected. Among the Greens the indication was for freedom to vote but, party sources explain, it is assumed that they largely voted in favour. In The Left (where the Left and M5S are active), the indication was to choose Irene Montero even if the vote was secret.
