Three attacks were conducted in the last hours against the UNIFIL peacekeeping contingent stationed in Lebanon. This was reported by the spokesperson of the UN mission, with a note issued in English and Arabic.
“Unifil peacekeepers and facilities were targeted today in three separate incidents in southern Lebanon, with four soldiers injured in one of the incidents,” it said.
Four Ghanaian peacekeepers “on duty were injured when a rocket – most likely fired by non-state actors in Lebanon – hit their base “UNP 5-42” east of the village of Ramyah. The peacekeepers sustained injuries and three of them were transferred to a hospital in Tyre for treatment.”
The other episode concerns the Italian military contingent, led by the Sassari Brigade in Shama: « The headquarters of the western sector of Unifil was hit by five rockets, which hit the maintenance workshop. Although it caused serious damage to the workshop, no peacekeepers were injured». But five soldiers were treated in the infirmary.
And it is not an isolated case: "This was the second time that this base was hit by the ongoing clashes in the area in less than a week. A 155 mm artillery shell hit the base on November 15."
Finally, "while a UNIFIL patrol was crossing a road northeast of Khirbat Silim village, an armed person shot directly at the patrol. No injuries were reported among the peacekeepers in this incident."
Investigations have been launched into each of these incidents and the mission has also informed the Lebanese Armed Forces.
According to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the rockets against the Italian contingent were fired by Hezbollah ( HERE THE NEWS ).
