Excavation continues in Japan under the rubble after the violent earthquake , of magnitude 7.4, which hit the country yesterday .

The death toll has risen to at least 48 dead and dozens seriously injured , local authorities reported today. Half of the deaths were recorded in Wajima city , the Ishikawa prefectural government said.

Prime Minister Kishida speaks of a "race against time" to save human lives . There was much damage, with at least 200 buildings destroyed by the fires that broke out following the violent quake.

Around 45,700 families were without electricity and over 155 earthquakes were recorded in two days .

The latest, in the last few hours, of magnitude 5.6, with the authorities inviting citizens to remain in safe areas.

The tsunami warning has been completely lifted .
