At least 12 people have died in a fire that engulfed three high-rise buildings in a residential complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po district. The victims include eight women, three men, and a firefighter.

Local media reported columns of thick grey smoke rising as emergency services tried to put out the flames.

Several people were trapped inside, and several firefighters were injured. The flames are believed to have spread from the bamboo scaffolding to the outside of the buildings.

Authorities closed sections of the nearby highway while firefighting operations continued.
