Dramatic twist in France. Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella , who after the first round counted the remaining seats to obtain an absolute majority and dictated the objectives on foreign, internal and immigration policy, are left with nothing in their hands .

The left party triumphs in the runoffs and the head of France Insoumise, Jean Luc Melenchon, claims the government . The Macronian center does not collapse, on the contrary it surpasses the National Rassemblement in terms of seats. Even the Republicans do better than the expected flop, so last night's big defeat is Marine Le Pen, left out of the desistance pact signed against her in recent days.

The surprise at the results of the ballots is total. Melenchon's New Popular Front obtained 182 seats, President Macron's party 168, Le Pen's Rassemblement National 143. Around sixty seats went to the Republicans.

However, the left is far from the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority , and the Macronian center bloc has no intention of making alliances that include Melenchon. Prime Minister Attal meanwhile resigned.

Macron vindicates his choice to dissolve Parliament: «The turnout (at the record level of 67%, ed.) shows that the French had to express themselves». Immediately afterwards, a call for "prudence" comes from the president's entourage because the results do not guarantee the creation of a "coherent coalition". Macron «will wait for the structuring of the new Assemblée Nationale to make the necessary decisions. The president, in his role as guarantor of the institutions, will ensure that the sovereign choice of the French is respected."

The hypotheses that are being improvised in these hours are a national union government oriented towards the centre, with the left reformists and the Republicains.

From Manon Aubry to Mathilde Panot to Manuel Bompard, Mélenchon's colonels proclaim the increase in the minimum wage and the 60-year pension, demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Attal. «Macron leaves or appoints a prime minister from our ranks», declared Jean Luc-Mélenchon , claiming the victory obtained «thanks to a policy capable of uniting people, a victory that will be studied by the left of all the world".

But the people who will probably have a voice in the next few days are also making their way in the attempt to negotiate the coalition with the center and the moderate right, the only conceivable solution for the government. «Tonight we are in the lead - said Raphaël Glucksmann, who dragged the Socialist Party higher still - but faced with a divided Assemblée Nationale we must behave like adults. We need to talk, we need to discuss, we need to dialogue."

While the people of the left spontaneously flocked to Place de la République, in Paris, to celebrate a victory that was as beautiful as it was unexpected, Marine Le Pen felt the pinch. Jordan Bardella appeared on the stage at the headquarters, dark-faced. He denounced the "unnatural alliances" between Macronians and the left. "Unfortunately - he said - the alliance of dishonor and the small electoral agreements between Macron and Attal with the far left deprive the voters of a government of the Rassemblement and throw France into the arms of Mélenchon ."
