Claudio Mandia , the 17-year-old from Battipaglia (Salerno) found dead on the campus where he had been studying in New York for two years, committed suicide.

This was confirmed by the Mt. Pleasant Police Department in a statement, which explains that on the morning of February 17 it responded to an emergency call for a suicide person from the EF Academy. "Upon entering the room - reads the note released by some media - the agents discovered a 17-year-old male student who died. The death occurred by hanging. An investigation was immediately launched".

Mandia died Thursday morning, his body would have been found in a different room than the one where he usually slept. A few hours later the parents - who run a food export company in Battipaglia - landed on American soil to celebrate his 18 years. But the agents, at the New York airport, had the task of informing them of the horrible news.

THE PUNISHMENT - Even the family's American lawyer had confirmed the suicide thesis in a note which corroborates the thesis according to which the young man was particularly upset at the punishment that had been inflicted on him after copying a very important task, preparatory to the achievement of the final diploma. The boy had been placed in solitary confinement for three days and faced expulsion.

"Primitive measures were the direct cause of Claudio's suicide while he was locked up in solitary confinement", the text of the note.

At first there was talk of illness. Then other hypotheses, extreme play, youth violence, and finally the suicide trail. The police will also have to ascertain the nature of the young man's de facto "detention" on the days in which he was isolated from the rest of the class. The autopsy has already been carried out, the body is now awaited for the return to Italy for the funeral.

"Claudio's dream - said his uncle - was to become a manager and specialize in economics. Then, however, every desire the other night was swept away".
