50 migrants are allegedly missing following the sinking of a boat which occurred off the Greek island of Karpathos, in the Aegean Sea. 29 people - Afghan, Iraqi and Iranian nationals - were rescued and said there were about eighty on board.

The boat had sailed from Antalya, Turkey, and was headed for Italy. Rescuers are looking for the migrants who are missing but the operations are hampered by the strong wind.

The Coast Guard said many of the survivors wore no life jackets.
