At least 49 inmates died and another 30 were injured in a fire likely to facilitate an attempted escape from the prison in Tuluá, 92 kilometers north of Cali, Colombia .

General Tito Yesid Castellanos, director of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec), confirmed that "unfortunately there was a revolt in hall 8 of the prison", where "there are 1,267 inmates, with the unfortunate result of 49 people death from the fire and another 30 injuries ".

General Castellanos then explained that he still does not have "an official and definitive version of what happened".

"We are following in the investigations at least two leads - he specified - that of the fire caused to facilitate an escape attempt, and a second of a revolt of inmates aimed at covering some irregular situations that are not clear for now".
