THE DATA – Out of 154 samples , the percentage of participants from Sardinian companies was approximately 65% , the remaining 35% from non-Sardinian companies, mostly from Tuscany and Liguria. 10% of the participating companies registered samples from certified organic farming.

«Unlike past editions, when many companies also participated with non-vintage wines in this edition, apart from a few 2018 and 2019, the vast majority (at least of the winners) opted for the latest bottling. We in the organization always encourage during the promotional period that precedes the registration of the champions, to want to have different vintages compete in order to give greater prominence to the evolutionary characteristics of this extraordinary product. Testimony has been had during the past editions with many awards in this sense», they explain from Aps Promo Eventi.

The 5 juries that worked on Thursday 25 were directed by the president of the Competition Pier Paolo Lorieri. «Vermentino, as has been reiterated on more than one occasion, is a vine with great potential, which has shown that it can incredibly adapt to climate change which in recent decades has become a determining factor, not only in Sardinia, but throughout the moderate European and non-European range. In Australia, for example, more and more white grape varieties are being replaced by Vermentino», explains Mario Bonamici, Aps Promo Eventi.

«A grape variety that gives winemakers the possibility of giving a lot of freedom during winemaking: still, late harvest, sparkling, refermented, classic method, charmat method, passito. A very eclectic and gastronomic wine. In my opinion, an important interpretation to stimulate more and more producers to dare and invest, obviously without disrespecting tradition. 2024 will also see the third edition of the International Wine Competition which we hope will remain in Sardinia, but we also hope that it will be able to take it beyond regional borders and why not, perhaps abroad», he concluded.
