Torres's desire for revenge resulted in a 1-0 victory over Sambenedettese in their opening match at the "Vanni Sanna" stadium. The victory, however, was marred by the death of a visiting journalist who collapsed at the stadium entrance before the match. Emergency services were quick but unable to save the man.
The match featured a lively first half, with the Rossoblù threatening a couple of times through Scotto. The captain had a sensational chance in the 29th minute, having been set up by Mastinu alone in the box, and he fired a shot past the keeper. Brentan was not left idle, making two great saves on Marrazzino and Sgarbi.
Finally, Zini's foul: a flying kick that hit Corsinelli in the face. He was sent off appropriately.
In the second half, Torres made their numerical superiority count. Corsinelli scored in the 53rd minute, but the referee disallowed it for an armball by Brentan early in the move. Substitute Carboni, however, scored in the 63rd minute, with Scotto missing a chance by shooting at the keeper but then doing well to recover and provide the assist for his teammate.
