"Rest in peace dad." Thus begins the long message that Marina O'Neill dedicates to her father Fabian the day after his death .

« For some time – continues the daughter on Instagram – you had lost your joy. I saw you sadder and sicker, your gaze absent, your body weaker and weaker. It hurt me to hear you say sometimes "I don't want to live anymore", in your few hours of sobriety ». The reference is precisely to the problem of alcoholism that afflicted the former Cagliari midfielder, "a disease that took everything away".

«I would have liked to understand what you were looking for every day of your life in alcohol. For more than 10 years, doctors have been expressing negative opinions and counting the months you have left to live. In these 10 years I have lost hope, but no one is ever ready for all of this".

« I forgive you dad, I swear I forgive you . I hope you heard my goodbye, when we held your hand with mom, I hope you felt the calm I wanted to convey to you in that chaos of emotions ».

And finally: « Thank you for giving me life, for leaving so much of you inside me. There is a lot of Fabian in this Marina . It makes me proud to know how much you were loved by everyone , and we will remember you for your kindness, generosity and humility. I will always love you and now I know it won't just be 'until I die' as you told me, but much more».

O'Neill, by decision of the three children – in addition to Marina there are Martinha and Flavio – will be cremated and his ashes deposited in the Paso de los Toros soccer field where he had begun to kick the ball.
