Tragedy in the Vicenza area.

Former cycling champion Davide Rebellin died today at the age of 51 in a road accident .

He was riding his bike on the regional 11 Vicenza-Verona when a truck hit him near the Montebello Vicentino motorway junction.

According to what is learned, the truck driver would not have noticed the accident and continued his journey . The carabinieri are sifting through the images of the security cameras of a restaurant next to the crash site to identify the model and license plate of the vehicle.

The circumstance in which the recognition of the body took place is also tragic. A brother of Rebellin, Carlo, had learned from the media that there had been an accident in the area. He immediately rushed to the spot – perhaps a sort of premonition – and immediately recognized Davide's crumpled bike .

Rebellin, from Verona, has won, among other things, an Amstel Gold Race, three editions of the Freccia Vallone and a stage of the Giro d'Italia. A silver medal won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was also revoked for positive doping. In 2004 he won a major road cycling classic, the Liège-Bastogne-Liège .
