After the critical and public success in America, the film “Mantènnere, guardiane il suono del sacro” arrives in Canada for an exclusive tour from 12 to 20 October , in four Canadian universities and academies from Quebec to Newfoundland, passing through Labrador and Ontario.

The feature film on the history and tradition of Canto a Cuncordu di Santu Lussurgiu, directed by Lussurgiu ethnomusicologist Diego Pani, will be screened on Monday, October 12th in Montreal , at the Centre des Musiciens du Monde. The following day, October 13th , in St. John’s , at the MMaP Research Centre of the Memorial University of Newfoundland. On the 19th , it will be Ottawa ’s turn, with a screening at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre. The Canadian tour will conclude with a screening on October 20th at the ImprovLab of the University of Guelph, Ontario .

The screenings will be complemented by workshops Pani will lead on audiovisual ethnomusicology and lessons on Sardinian multi-voice singing, exploring the role of audiovisual documentation in ethnomusicological research and the transmission of traditional musical practices.

The film tells the story of the singing in Cuncordu di Santu Lussurgiu, exploring the relationship between two generations of singers of the Confraternity of the Rosary: Cuncordu 'e Su Rosàriu, which has accompanied the rituals of Holy Week in Lussurgiu since the 1970s. The young brothers have inherited the baton and are passing on the song. "Through an intimate and participatory perspective, the film reflects on the connection between music, ritual, and community, questioning how tradition is preserved and transformed, including in relation to the relationship with researchers," Pani explains.

Upon returning to Italy, the documentary will be screened on November 8th at the Siotto Foundation in Cagliari, with the participation of the young singers of Su Cuncordu Sos Zovanos de su Rosariu, among the protagonists of the documentary, who will perform in concert after the screening.
