Gianmarco Tamberi, Olympic high jump gold medalist and Italian flag bearer at the opening ceremony of Paris 2024, left today for the French capital on the presidential plane alongside the Head of State Sergio Mattarella, who took him as a guest. «I would say that this Olympic adventure couldn't have started better», added the athlete.
The Head of State visited the Olympic Village and sang the Italian anthem together with the Azzurri, then addressed them.
«You have the affection of all of Italy around you. It is a sincere affection which you must not interpret as pressure", he said. «A little while ago we sang the anthem: it is better to hear it many times, but thanks to you... The medals that arrive will be welcome, but the sense of sport that you will have is more important».
Finally, smiling, he quipped: "Here I feel vaguely out of age." Then a long round of applause from the Azzurri and a gift, the Italia Team sweatshirt given by the two standard-bearers, Gianmarco Tamberi and Arianna Errigo.
