Wrong-way car, tragic accident in Cagliari: two 19-year-olds from Quartu die

Two young lives shattered during the night in a terrible accident that occurred in via Vesalio in Cagliari: Thomas Frau and Federico Cubeddu, both nineteen years old from Quartu, died after the crash of their Peugeot 207 into a Maserati at around 3.45 am.

The third young man, 18, who was with them and the 44-year-old driver of the other car were also injured. Frau died on the spot while his friend's heart stopped beating around 9.30 am at the Brotzu hospital where he had been accompanied by 118 in very serious conditions.

A tragic outcome for yet another road accident in Sardinia. According to the initial reconstruction of the Local Police officers, the Peugeot with the three boys on board would have taken Via Vesalio the wrong way from the roundabout located near the Terramaini park. The crash, in pouring rain, a few hundred meters later: no sign of braking on the asphalt.

Frau, who was driving the Peugeot, died immediately in the impact. Cubeddu was immediately accompanied by 118 to Brotzu: his conditions immediately appeared very serious. The doctors did everything they could but unfortunately the news of his death arrived around 9.30 am.

The consequences were less serious for the third young man who was in the Peugeot, most likely in the back seat, hospitalized at the Monserrato Polyclinic. Fractures and minor injuries also suffered for the driver of the Maserati, who was hospitalized at Brotzu.

The investigations were carried out by officers from the accident section of the Local Police of Cagliari who intervened immediately in via Vesalio. The two survivors were interviewed, but the young man, in a state of shock, did not remember anything.

The driver of the Maserati instead found himself in front of the Peugeot without being able to do anything to avoid the impact. The two cars were seized and the road was reopened to traffic at around 8am. The fire brigade was also involved in the rescue operations as well as the 118 ambulance personnel.

Frau's body was taken to the mortuary rooms of the San Michele cemetery in Cagliari. Here the family members recognized the body of their loved one. Cubeddu's relatives at Brotzu had to do the same thing. Now there is a city, Quartu, that mourns two young lives broken at the end of an evening of fun.
