Fear erupted overnight in Quartu, where a van and a car caught fire on Via Grandi. Residents in the area were awakened by a loud bang around 1:30 a.m. They rushed out onto the street to find themselves facing flames engulfing the vehicles.

They immediately alerted the fire department. Crews arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire before it spread to other homes and parked cars. The two vehicles were legally parked along the road.

The fire department's investigation will now determine whether it was arson. The fact remains that some passersby reported seeing a hooded person wandering around the area around 1:00 AM.

This brings the number of car and van fires in Quartu since the beginning of the year to 34. The latest incident occurred just a few days ago, when a van was set alight in a condominium courtyard on Via Danimarca in Pitz'e Serra, and a few minutes later, a car was set ablaze on Via Cilea in the Santo Stefano area.

In the latter case, the fire also damaged two other parked cars and the facade of a house. A gas leak appears to have been the cause of a camper fire on Via Viareggio two days ago.
