"This is a story that saddens and embitters me deeply from a human perspective, and it highlights, as always, that mayors are the target of the lowest bidder." This was stated by the president of ANCI Sardinia and mayor of Fonni, Daniela Falconi, following the death threats received by the mayor of Arborea, Manuela Pintus.

"Whenever a citizen or even higher institutions are frustrated, they take it out on administrators. And this is something we should reflect on deeply," he adds. "Sardinia is among the regions most affected by these gestures toward mayors and administrators. Not a week goes by without us hearing about this."

And if the threats and intimidation continue, Falconi continues, "clearly not enough is being done, both in terms of recognizing their role, but also in providing local authorities with the tools to manage disruptions, to plan without necessarily having to ask for what is rightfully theirs. The mayor's role is, in any case, a catalyst for all the community's frustrations," he concludes, "and recognizing this and supporting it from an institutional standpoint could already be an important step."
