Struck by a sudden heart attack while he was busy helping a friend to harvest grapes. Mister Giuseppe Marzano, 79 years old, former coach of Thiesi in the Promotion and Excellence championship, died like this in the town where he was known and loved.
A man who is a symbol of Thiesi football, a career that saw him busy as a footballer for Seunis in the 1960s, before taking on the role of coach for the Thiesi youth teams, Beretti, Juniores, Allievi, leading them to triumph in Sardinia and performing well in the national finals.
Born in 1945 in Thiesi, he discovered his vocation as a trainer-educator of young footballers. Thiesi, fresh winner of the single-round Promotion championship, entered Serie D in 1973 and entrusted Marzano with the leadership of the youth sector.
In two years he managed to set up an exceptional organizational structure that led the black-green company to repeated successes in the Beretti, Juniores and Allievi categories. The successes in Sardinia were followed by several successes in the national finals.
Many were the youngsters who arrived in Serie D from that youth sector: Bruno Caneo (later arrived in Serie A), Antonio Manca (then in C with Torres) Biosa, Carta, Tanchis, Fiori and others. After the relegation of Thiesi, Marzano took over the first team in Eccellenza, transferring all the young players from the Juniores and leading them to satisfactory results. He then had the opportunity to coach Bonorva in Promozione, Ploaghe in Prima Categoria and Thiesi again in the 80s.
The funeral will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 9 October, at 10.30 am, at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Seunis.
