The Porto Torres Lions club pays tribute to the Fallen of Nasiriyah
Ceremony in memory of the 28 victims, including 12 Carabinieri, five Army soldiers and two Italian civiliansNineteen years after the terrorist attack in Nassiriyah which caused the death of 28 people including 12 carabinieri, five soldiers of the Italian Army and two Italian civilians, the Lions Club of Porto Torres , in collaboration with the municipal administration, wanted to make tribute to the victims with a commemoration.
In Nassiriya square a bouquet of flowers was placed next to the war memorial , created by the artist Vidèo Anfossi. The ceremony was presided over by the mayor Massimo Mulas with the deputy mayor Simona Fois, the president of the Lions Club, Matteo Sanna, the master of ceremonies Gianni Tamponi and the secretary Enzo Carcangiu. Also present at the event was the lieutenant of the carabinieri of the local company, Giuseppe Denegri.
It was November 12, 2003 when at 10.40 a tanker forced the entrance to the Maestrale base manned by the Italian carabinieri, in the city of Nassiriyah, Iraq: the two men on board detonated a bomb. The explosion, with a domino effect, blew up the ammunition depot, killing 28 people: 19 Italians and 9 Iraqis.
