The central laboratory of the Duilio Casula Polyclinic has isolated, for the first time in Sardinia , the Omicron BA.5 variant of the SarsCoV2 virus.
The variant was found on a 36-year-old , tested during control activities carried out in a hospital setting. The man is fine and is in home isolation.
"This confirms that the coronavirus is still circulating and that the measures to protect hospitals must continue to be maintained" explains Ferdinando Coghe, medical director of the Cagliari university hospital ".

As for the specific case, "we discovered it - continues Coghe - only thanks to the molecular buffer, which is the only method that then allows genomic sequencing as required by our structure by the Higher Institute of Health on behalf of the Ministry of Health. and in the national integrated surveillance plan ".
The BA.5 sub-variant of Covid-19 , which seems to be more contagious than the previous ones, arrived almost at the same time as the BA.4 and, according to the most recent data collected by the British Health Security Agency (UKHSA), in Portugal the May 20 stood at 37 percent of cases in circulation, against 18.47 just two weeks earlier and evidence of rapid spread.
