The national Democratic Party visits the Bancali prison to check the health conditions of Alfredo Cospito, the anarchist leader in the 41 bis regime since May and on the eightieth day of hunger strike against the harsh prison regime to which he is subjected.

However, the democratic group leader in the Chamber, Debora Serracchiani , does not join the appeal for the revocation of the harsh prison sentence for the 55-year-old from Abruzzo.

"It was necessary to listen to the reasons - says the former president of Friuli-Venezia Giulia - then we think that article 27 of the Constitution should be applied to the end and that the ways in which the sentence is served are important". Therefore, no evaluation in general terms but only that relating to the particular case of Cospito to ascertain that the man's health situation is not falling.

"It is certain however - declares the former Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando - that the specific case poses the problem of the effective functionality of the 41 bis with respect to crimes that are partially different from those that generated this administrative instrument".

The fact that the harsh prison for the anarcho-insurrectionist was endorsed by the former Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia , an eminent member of the Draghi government which also included the Democratic Party, does not embarrass Orlando: «He did it at a different time from what has come to be determined today. After which every single act is subject to further checks, to the possibility of making a complaint and to the ruling of the Court of Cassation which we await and which guarantees the coherence of the legal system».

Deputy Silvio Lai has already met the prisoner on other occasions: "He underlines the reasons for his protest and believes that it is unreasonable that harsh prison terms are applied to him".

Then the former senator reports on Cospito's state of health: «Over time his conditions do not improve and he becomes more fragile. But he is in any case kept under control both by the 41 bis doctor and by the prison health system and also by the personal doctor indicated by his lawyer. Of course it is not a stable condition.

Applause from the whole delegation for the professionalism of the operators of the Sassari penitentiary despite the difficult conditions in which they work. «Speaking with the director and the agents, we had confirmation - reports Senator Walter Verini - of the dramatic condition of Italian prisons. In addition to the latter, figures such as healthcare professionals, cultural mediators and psychologists are missing".
