Nobody touches Capo Figari without the Environmental Impact Assessment. Signed Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. This is the response of the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security to a parliamentary question presented by the MP of Italia Viva, Roberto Giachetti, who asked for the opinion of the ministry on the «coherence, for a Special Protection Area, of the project» of transformation into accommodation structure of the former Luigi Serra Battery and the former Semaforo from which Guglielmo Marconi carried out the first short-wave radio connection experiment, located in the promontory of Golfo Aranci, defined as a special protection area, included within the Natura 2000 sites.

Given that the Ministry of the Environment will continue to monitor the case, from the point of view of environmental protection of the sites involved, in the document it reiterates the need for the project to be positively subjected to VinCa, delegated to the competent regional offices, which will have to consider the impact on environment and the conservation of the sites deriving from the restructuring of the two complexes and the increase in human load on the entire promontory of Capo Figari, following the transformation of the two properties into luxury hotels, as described on the website of the company awarded the regional tender for their valorization.

According to what we read in the Mic document, when the Region was consulted for the appropriate checks, «it does not appear that following the thirty-year concession granted to the company New fari srl for the development of the aforementioned properties, the competent offices have received any request for landscape authorization in regarding the transformation of the former Capo Figari lookout station and the Luigi Serra Battery into a luxury hotel, nor from an environmental point of view, has the company submitted a request for verification of the coherence of the project with respect to the Special Protection Area". The concession of the two structures last June is part of the Orizzonte Fari regional project, aimed at the redevelopment of lighthouses and traffic light stations on the Sardinian coast for their reuse and public tourist use.

According to the Maremosso citizens' committee, committed to protecting the landscape of Golfo Aranci, with the project proposed by New fari srl, Capo Figari risks privatization and overbuilding which the committee is fighting against, after having also launched a petition on Change.org which, in just a few months, has collected over 58 thousand signatures.
