Work is underway to repair the dirt road on the ford connecting Muravera and Villaputzu (with a temporary ban on vehicle traffic). The work is expected to be completed this afternoon. The ford was built by the Municipality of Villaputzu (which assumed responsibility, as the work was previously performed by other entities) and is currently the only way to reach the town in a reasonable amount of time. For this reason, Mayor Sandro Porcu has asked that the controversy over the ford, "which—despite the difficulties—is working," be put aside and that the focus be on the contract for the bridge work: "That," Porcu added, "is a disgrace."

The bridge has been closed for over two years, and work is progressing very slowly . At the last public meeting in early December, administrators and citizens urged the Metropolitan City of Cagliari (the body responsible for the bridge following the abolition of the Province of Southern Sardinia) to potentially terminate the contract with the company that won the contract . To date, only twenty percent of the overall work has been completed. In short, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to renovate the bridge by 2026. Citizens and tourists would be forced to cross a raised ford or take a long detour from Quirra.
