The investigations appear to be closed into yesterday afternoon's dramatic road accident on the new Sardinian Orientale which cost the life of Davide Sapienza, the 25-year-old from Cagliari who, while driving his Clio, crashed into a Volvo FH 460 truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The carabinieri from the stations of Castiadas, Villaputzu and the Costa Rei station who detected the accident also collected testimony from some other motorists who were traveling along the Orientale behind the two vehicles involved in the accident at km 30+400. According to an initial reconstruction of the facts, carried out under the directives of Major Massimo Meloni, commander of the San Vito Company, the driver of the Clio, who was traveling in the direction of Cagliari-Muravera, suddenly and inexplicably invaded the other direction of travel, going towards collide head-on with the truck which was proceeding in the opposite direction. The large vehicle was driven by Daniele Spiga, 41 years old, from Scano Montiferro, and had a worker from Assemini at his side. The first was accompanied to Brotzu by the air ambulance. The second at Muravera hospital. Their conditions are not of concern.
There would have been no overtaking attempt. What betrayed the victim could have been an illness or a mechanical failure. But these are only hypotheses. The driver of the truck apparently made a desperate attempt to avoid the Clio: a very violent impact with the car reduced to wreckage and the young driver killed instantly.
Major Meloni has already submitted a detailed report to the Prosecutor's Office on the matter. The young man's body is located in the Castiadas cemetery. Years ago another fatal accident occurred on this stretch of road.
