It took 15 long years but the story of the fugitive Quirico Carta, from Buddusò, can now be put to an end.
The story begins on February 14 , 2008 . Carta , 47 years old and a past criminal for a murder in 1993, enters a bar in the village and shoots two patrons. Both are injured but manage to save themselves. The attacker runs away and disappears into thin air. Many launch appeals to invite him to turn himself in, including the parish priest, but the fugitive does not show up.
On 17 October 2012, the trial for the double attempted murder of the bar and for carrying a clandestine weapon ended. Carta is sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Over the years, the carabinieri and in particular those of the Ozieri operational and mobile radio unit have continued the investigations also with stalking and stalking of those who could have had contact with the bandit, using modern technologies.
The commitment is rewarded and Carta is located in Corsica , in a very small rural municipality in the south-western part of the island. He has lived there since 2013 under another identity . His partner, an unsuspecting French woman, calls him "Antonio" . He himself had introduced himself with this name, he said he was from Nuoro.
The couple lived in serenity in the countryside for years until the afternoon of January 30, 2018 when "Antonio" was struck by a fatal illness . On 2 June three years later , after intense international police cooperation with rogatory activities initiated by the Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office, the agents of the DTPJ (Direction Territoriale de Police Judiciaire) of the Police Nationale of Ajaccio - following the precise indications provided by the Carabinieri of Ozieri who had carried out all the necessary investigations - presented themselves for a search at the home of the ex-partner of the wanted man . In addition to finding false Italian documents (a health card and an identity card which are part of a batch of documents stolen from the Municipality of Fonni in April 2009) , an urn containing the ashes of the deceased "Antonio", alias Quirico, was unearthed Paper. The woman had decided to bury them in the same garden where he died.
At this point the Cagliari RIS specialists enter the scene who had performed cross-comparisons between the DNA extrapolated from the incinerated remains and that of the wanted man's relatives, as well as with the profile that had been isolated from the objects recovered in the Pattada sheepfold in which , in April 2010, the man - before leaving because he was hunted by the Arma - had stayed for some time.
From the scientific examination comes the confirmation: the ashes kept in the urn unearthed in the garden of that remote house in Corsica belong to the fugitive buddusoino Quirico Carta .
