The archaeological discovery in Sestu during the works for the gas pipeline on the former provincial road 8 has aroused much curiosity, but also much concern among citizens.
«A new and previously unknown archaeological context – they write on the Facebook page of the Superintendency of Cagliari -, the materials discovered are likely pertinent to a necropolis with burials within amphorae (enchytrismos) from the Punic era».
The Superintendency is now investigating, documenting and trying to secure the burials and archaeological finds, in order to be able to proceed with the planned works once the important context has been documented.
While the excavation area has been put under strict surveillance, especially at night, by the Carabinieri of Sestu and those of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit. Video cameras have also been installed and patrols are constant to prevent incursions by tomb raiders.
