Six days ago, it nearly sank off the island of San Pietro. Today, it is blocked in the port of Cagliari after safety checks. The Blue Ocean A vessel , flying the Caribbean flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, underwent checks that revealed numerous serious deficiencies , preventing its departure. Also docked at the port channel is a container ship flying the flag of the Marshall Islands .
The Blue Ocean A arrived in Cagliari after a main engine failure that rendered it unmanageable off the southwest coast of Carloforte . Only the intervention of the rescue team prevented worse consequences. During the inspection, 54 irregularities were found, 30 of which were considered decisive for the detention. The critical issues concern the fire-fighting systems, the life-saving equipment, some bridge equipment, the level of crew training in emergency management, and the living and working conditions on board. The ship will remain in port until minimum safety conditions are restored and a new inspection is carried out.
The checks were also extended to a container ship docked in Cagliari's canal port. This vessel was also detained following onboard inspections . The irregularities required the vessel to be transferred directly to the shipyard for repairs. The vessel was also found to lack certification of compliance with European regulations on hazardous materials installed on board : this resulted in a ban on access to European Union ports and an administrative fine of €10,000 for the captain.
