Two prison police officers were attacked while on guard duty at a city hospital in Sassari. According to initial reports , the attack was committed by a prisoner suffering from psychiatric problems who also attacked the carabinieri before his arrest.
The man, the Uil Pa union reports, went into a rage and attempted to leave his room. Stopped by the officers, he punched one of the two men in the chest before being stopped by the subsequent intervention of the hospital security personnel.
The general secretary of the trade association Michele Cireddu states: «We comment with deep concern on the latest critical event involving, against their will, the agents of Sassari. Fortunately, the operational capacity of the police has avoided much more serious and tragic consequences. However, this episode does nothing but highlight an unsustainable situation that has been going on for some time in Sardinian institutions». «In the prisons of Sardinia – he continues – there is a dangerous mix of psychiatric inmates and troublemakers, many of whom have been removed from the peninsula . It seems that the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) has identified our region as the recipient of unmanageable cases, without however ensuring any concrete intervention to guarantee the safety of workers and the functionality of the institutions. We are facing a real emergency , which the heads of the administration, the Government and the other institutions continue to treat as business as usual».
