An appeal to Federmeccanica and the Region to help workers in the Sarroch and Macchiareddu industrial areas, who are no longer able to afford fuel costs, was launched by the local Fiom-Cgil, Fsm-Cisl, and Uilm-Uil unions in a letter calling for a meeting and active commitment. "We are asking," said secretaries Marco Mereu, Marco Angioni, and Massimo Palmas, along with the Delegates' Coordination Committee, "for a travel allowance paid by the employers' association and a discount paid by the Region to encourage the use of public transportation, which, however, needs to be improved ." The coordination committee of metalworker delegates from the Sarroch and Macchiareddu industrial areas met to address what was described as "a situation that is no longer sustainable." The rising costs that make using one's own car prohibitive are compounded by the lack of a public transport network that guarantees punctuality across the various working hours, both during regular and overtime shifts. Therefore, since there is currently no alternative to using a private vehicle, the unions explain, a large portion of wages goes towards travel costs.

" This situation can no longer be placed on the shoulders of workers who, moreover, work at strategic sites of local and national importance," emphasized Fiom, Fsm, and UILM—for example, the Sarroch refinery, which, given the international situation, is committed to ensuring constant and continuous production. Hence the appeal to employers' associations, the Region, political parties, and even Cacip, with the aim of initiating discussions to find appropriate solutions. Concrete measures, such as dedicated transportation services and travel reimbursement, must be implemented as soon as possible for metalworkers.
