A workshop concealing an illegal car demolition facility and storage facility for special waste, including hazardous waste, was discovered by the Carabinieri in San Gavino Monreale, in the Gruì area.
The owner of the business, a 46-year-old local body shop mechanic originally from Cagliari and already known to the police, was reported at large and held responsible for numerous environmental violations and illegal waste management.
The military's inspection of the affected area revealed a space of approximately 1,800 square meters used as a warehouse and uncontrolled storage center for hazardous and non-hazardous waste . Inside the site, the military found over seventy abandoned vehicles —cars, motorcycles, campers, boats, and even a tow truck—stripped of mechanical parts and bodywork, as well as dozens of engine blocks, transmissions, and car doors that had been irregularly dismantled.
The inspections also revealed the presence of unauthorized discharges of used oil and other polluting substances , the absence of the required environmental and fire prevention permits, as well as further violations regarding soil and water protection.
During the operation, the Carabinieri also found a toy rifle without the red marking, the possession of which is prohibited under such conditions, seizing it and charging the 46-year-old with a further violation.
The entire area of the workshop, including the warehouse and its appurtenances, has been placed under preventive seizure with a view to confiscation.
