Rescue in a remote area of Sardinia: a training exercise by the Guardia di Finanza and Alpine Rescue.

A complex, high-risk search and rescue exercise was conducted in a remote area of the Siliqua mountains. The exercise was aimed at testing the complex operational and technical capabilities of the specialist components of the air section of the Cagliari Guardia di Finanza's naval air operations unit, the Guardia di Finanza's mountain rescue unit of the Nuoro provincial command (SAGF), and the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS) of Sardinia.

The regional system, characterized by its helicopter rescue operations, is increasingly called upon to intervene in complex emergency situations, requiring prompt action, in close synergy and coordination between personnel from the various rescue components, with the integration of personnel, vehicles, and specialized canine units.

The highly challenging exercise was conducted in a hostile environment, characterized by thick vegetation and inaccessible, rugged terrain. This environment is representative of the island's typical environmental conditions, where real emergencies often occur, requiring the application of joint intervention procedures.

The culmination of the complex exercise was the deployment of the Guardia di Finanza helicopter, tactically crucial for transporting assistance teams to the intervention area, and the use of the rescue winch, which, in addition to requiring perfect understanding between pilots, on-board operators, and ground rescuers, drastically reduces the time it takes to reach the target being protected, ensuring rescue even in places inaccessible by ground vehicles.
