The head doctor of the pain medicine department of the Marino hospital in Cagliari , Tomaso Cocco , was acquitted of the charge of malicious epidemic by the judge for the preliminary hearings of the Court, Roberto Cau. The doctor, already involved in the Monte Nuovo investigation into an alleged Sardinian mafia organisation, was instead sent to trial for fines contested in violation of the rule requiring quarantine during the Covid emergency .
The judge also sent the documents back to the prosecutor's office, as requested by the public prosecutor Rossana Allieri, for obstruction of justice against a witness who testified in favor of the head physician, defended by the lawyers Rosaria Manconi and Potito Flagella.
Tomaso Cocco had been accused by the Cagliari Prosecutor's Office of having gone around during the pandemic knowing that he was positive for the virus, thus knowingly allowing its propagation: hence the very serious accusation of malicious epidemic which the law punishes with a life sentence . For this dispute, the Gup Roberto Cau considered that the fact does not exist.
Only later was it discovered that the head doctor of the Cagliari Pain Therapy department was instead subjected to investigation by the Anti-Mafia District Directorate of the Sardinian capital for mafia association, as part of the Monte Nuovo investigation which hypothesized an alleged criminal association of which they would have part white collar workers and exponents of the historic crime of the Nuoro area. Following that investigation, which was recently closed, Tomaso Cocco was arrested and held in precautionary custody for a few months between the Uta prison and the Palermo prison. Then house arrest and release from prison. Today the first good news arrived for him with the acquittal of the very serious accusation of malicious epidemic and the indictment for violations of the anti-Covid quarantine rules : therefore not in the Court of Assizes, but before the single judge.
