A year ago, the attack on his mother in Ploaghe, his arrest and attempted murder charge.

Today in court in Sassari, the sentence of 4 years and 10 months was handed down by the panel presided over by Giancosimo Mura, with Monia Adami and Sara Pelicci on his flanks, while the prosecutor, Erica Angioni, had requested 17 years of prison.

A complex case involving a 42-year-old man who, as summarized during the trial, was experiencing a state of mental fragility aggravated by alcohol abuse.

The man, who was working abroad, had returned to the village and, a few days before the incident, in June 2024 , had been subjected to compulsory medical treatment. Then, suddenly , his anger was directed at the 71-year-old woman, kicking and punching her, and attempting to strangle her . Her son interrupted this act by destroying the household furnishings and, once he became aware of his mother's condition, alerted 112 and the Carabinieri, who took him to Bancali prison, where he has been held ever since.

According to the prosecutor, the 42-year-old is also responsible for mistreatment of the woman from 2019 to 2024, a claim however rejected by lawyer Rosangela Mele. The lawyer noted that her client did not live with his mother and was employed outside of Italy. Some witnesses, including the mother's own, dismissed the charge, focusing instead on the defendant's "pain of living," which frequently resulted in self-harm and hospitalizations. The psychiatric report, while confirming the defendant's capacity for understanding, found a schizoid disorder and the need for pharmacological therapy.

Regarding the attempted murder charge, Mele argued that it should be downgraded to aggravated assault . And so it was, because the panel acquitted the 42-year-old of the mistreatment charge, sentencing him only, as stated, for aggravated assault, to 4 years and 10 months. The man will be placed on probation.
