With a lengthy speech that lasted almost five hours before the Assize Court of Nuoro , the lawyers Nicola Caricaterra and Stefano Zoccano today asked for the acquittal of their clients, Orune's twin brothers, Mauro and Giuseppe Contena, aged 54, accused of the murder of Mauro Antonio Carai, the 72-year-old farmer killed with 35 stab wounds on the night of August 28, 2021 near his Fiat Punto in the countryside of the town.

The defenders questioned the time of death : «Our consultant, Professor Stefano De Pasquale Ceratti, incontrovertibly dated Carai's death between 11pm and 12am and not between 8pm and 9pm . Now, as also verified by the Carabinieri, the Contena twins were at home and didn't come out all night ." The two lawyers then fought over the blood traces found in one of the defendants' cars: in his indictment the prosecutor Riccardo Belfiori had indicated as incriminating evidence, urging a life sentence, the compatibility of the DNA obtained from the blood found between the Contenas and the victim, identifying the motive in conflicts over grazing issues.

« There is no certainty on the bloodstain found in one of the two cars that the genetic profile is Carai's - the defense lawyers argued - a double profile was found, but no scientific evidence proves that one of the two profiles is that of the victim . Carai bled to death and in such a condition the blood should have splattered everywhere, even the car should have been full of blood, but instead an infinitesimal part of it was found which does not lead back to the victim. It was also proven that the car had not been washed."

The trial was adjourned until April 15 when the third and final defender of the accused, the lawyer Luigi Esposito, will speak. For the replies and the sentence we will return to the courtroom on April 22nd.
