When a sting can kill in moments. That's what happened to Davide Mameli, 50, a quarry worker living in Galtellì, who died Sunday evening after being stung by an insect, which after further investigations turned out to be a hornet, on Osala beach in Orosei.

The acute pain and a phobia of various types of wasps, caused by an allergy, sent the man into a panic. He shouted to his wife that some insect had stung him and that he was in extreme, unbearable pain. His wife immediately alerted emergency services and provided him with the medication that could have saved his life in such a situation . Mameli, aware of his allergies, always carried a betamethasone-based medication (Bentelan) with him, which he took within minutes of the incident.

He sat down, took the medicine, and after a few moments he collapsed. Davide died almost instantly, most likely from a heart attack, perhaps caused by the panic of the moment . Emergency services were unsuccessful.
