The international project was presented at the Manifattura Tabacchi in Cagliari   Orienteering 4 Research Sardinia 2025.

The result of collaboration between Sardegna Ricerche and Ssd Pwt Italia , with the patronage of the Region, the Gutturu Mannu Regional Natural Park, Porto Conte Ricerche and Fiso Sardegna.

Born within the broader Sport and Wellness 4 Research program, Sardegna Ricerche aims to create a network of strategic partnerships between the worlds of sport and wellness to develop and implement innovative initiatives through which to translate scientific discoveries into effective and sustainable practices.

The Region has therefore selected orienteering or orienteering race to study the interaction between physical exercise and increased performance, between environment and psychophysical well-being, thanks to the synergy with one of the reference associations of the discipline, the Pwt Italia.

In this perspective, a collaboration will be started with CeRiSM - Research Center "Sport, Mountain and Health" of the University of Verona and Trento, directed by Federico Schena, which carries out basic and applied research in the field of physical activity and sports, with particular attention to responses to the natural environment and in extraordinary conditions, to gender specificities in healthy populations, to elderly subjects and to subjects with chronic-degenerative diseases and to the research relationships already active in Sardinia with the group directed by Prof. Lucia Cugusi of the University of Sassari.

At an international level, a partnership will be established with the Olympic Centre in Lillehammer (Norway), while further studies will be carried out on the fields of the 5 Days Madonna di Campiglio and O-Ringen events in Sweden, which feature the presence of 25,000 orienteers.

The results of this process will be illustrated in a conference (September 29) in the science and technology park of Sardinia.

A significant contribution will be given by the active involvement of schools. From Tuesday 18 March the provincial phases of the Sardinian Student Orienteering Championships will begin in Oristano, at the Pineta di Torregrande, which will continue in Cagliari (21 March) in the Parco di Monte Urpinu, in Nuoro (26 March) in the Parco di Ugolio and in Sassari (1 April) at the CUS San Giovanni facilities. Finally, on Friday 11 April in the Pineta di Arborea there will be space for the regional phase to decree all the young island champions. Also important are the training initiatives linked to the practice of the discipline with a first high-level course (5-7 May), held by the technician Jessica Lucchetta of PWT Italia, while, as part of 5 Days Madonna di Campiglio, Sardinian teachers will take part in the training course (5-12 July) to acquire the nomination of technician. Sardegna Ricerche will also get involved with map and compass in a team building event in September.

The calendar will culminate with the international travelling competition Five + Five Sardinia, from 29 September to 11 October , which will allow the promotion of 10 extraordinary Sardinian locations for the practice of orienteering throughout the world, with the creation of new permanent cartographic systems that will remain part of the heritage of the territory.
