Recovery operations began today on the yacht Atina , the 47-metre vessel flying the Cook Islands flag which sank on 10 August in the sea off the beach at Le Saline , in the Gulf of Olbia, following a fire that broke out on board.
No one was injured in the accident: the people on board the vessel managed to save themselves by escaping on a tender .
The wreck currently lies at a depth of 8 metres and is constantly monitored with satellite instruments by the Coast Guard , to protect the marine environment.
In the last few days, several underwater inspections have been carried out by a specialized company, which highlighted the absence of significant fuel leaks from the hull : some small diesel leaks were detected, immediately contained and eliminated by the team present in the area 24 hours a day.
In recent days, the same company appointed by the shipowner has quantified the fuel content in the vessel's tanks , finding a total of approximately 25 cubic meters of diesel . Today, the defueling operations for the extraction of all the fuel will begin, necessary and preparatory to the subsequent phases of recovery and re-floating the wreck.
The procedure will be completed in 4-5 days.
