Nuoro confirms itself among the most virtuous cities in Sardinia in waste management . On February 17, as part of the VII edition of the EcoForum on Circular Economy in Sassari, the Municipality received the title of “Comune Riciclone e Rifiuti Free” from Legambiente Sardegna. An extraordinary result that positions Nuoro as the only Sardinian provincial capital to obtain this prestigious recognition.
This award adds to the already significant result of 2024, when Nuoro was awarded the title of the first Sardinian capital to be Waste Free, the first in Italy outside the North-East regions. An award that is based on concrete data: in 2023, the city achieved 83.2% separate waste collection, further improving compared to 2022, and in 2024 it continued on this path with an excellent 85.4%. This result is accompanied by the significant reduction in the production of unsorted waste, which fell to 60.4 kg per inhabitant in 2024, a value well below the threshold set for Waste Free Municipalities.
In just ten years, Nuoro has undergone a real growth path, going from 61.4% of separate waste collection in 2014 to 85.4% in 2024. A figure that reflects a profound change in the habits of citizens and an ever-increasing attention to the environment. The Municipality has also achieved the objectives of the Regional Waste Management Plan, set for 2029, five years in advance, including the containment of per capita waste production below 438 kg/inhabitant per year (Nuoro residents in 2024 stood at 407 kg).
The strategies implemented by the Municipal Administration to achieve these results have been multiple and innovative. Among the main actions, the establishment in 2018 of the Municipal Waste Observatory has allowed real-time monitoring of separate waste collection, allowing timely adjustments and optimizations.
