After months of silence and the project being stopped at the feasibility stage, the issue of the Nuoro-Abbasanta railway is finally back in the spotlight, this time in the context of the European Parliament . The Democratic Party of Sardinia announced this in a note, which highlights the intervention of MEP Giuseppe Lupo, representing the islands. In his speech in Strasbourg, the Honorable Lupo drew the Assembly's attention to the serious infrastructural delay that affects many peripheral areas of Europe, with a particular focus on Sardinia. The case of Nuoro - the only provincial capital in Italy still without a standard gauge railway network - was cited as an emblematic example of the structural inequalities that persist in island territories.
The MEP also highlighted the critical issues in the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), designed to reduce territorial gaps but which, according to Lupo, is showing clear limitations precisely in the most disadvantaged regions, such as the islands.
In his appeal, Lupo asked for an extension of at least 18 months for the use of Next Generation EU resources, in order to allow the completion of projects already at an advanced stage but not feasible within the currently foreseen deadlines . A measure that, he underlined, would be essential to guarantee the full implementation of the interventions, strengthen territorial cohesion and reduce infrastructural inequalities between the center and the periphery.
The Sardinian Democratic Party expressed full support for the request, underlining how Sardinia urgently needs structural investments, particularly in the field of transport, mobility and strategic infrastructures.
"The resources of the Next Generation EU cannot be transformed into missed opportunities - the note reads - Defending their effectiveness means defending the right of every territory to grow with dignity".
With this new European passage, the battle for the railway in Nuoro returns to the center of political debate, turning the spotlight on one of the historic infrastructural wounds of Sardinia. Now we await concrete answers from national and community institutions.
