Masih Shahid, the 30-year-old Pakistani accused of the murder of Mirko Farci , aged 19, and the attempted murder of his mother and his ex-partner, Paola Piras, 52 years from Tortolì, attempted to take his own life in the night between Monday and Tuesday in Uta prison, where he has been held for almost a year.

As reconstructed by the Fns Cisl, he would have tried to hang himself with a sheet in the bathroom, but was heard by the cellmate who gave the alarm. The prison officers saved him: after giving him the first treatment together with the prison doctor, they transported him to the hospital in Cagliari for further information. His condition was deemed good by the doctors and he was immediately discharged.

"Despite the many difficult cases and the staff reduced to the bone, the prison officers managed to intervene promptly and save the life of the young Pakistani - said Eduardo Leonardo, assistant secretary general of the Fns Cisl of Cagliari - Even in difficult conditions, the agents they work to ensure the best safety conditions in our prisons. I hope that the administration will take note of this and reward these workers ".

"We have many inmates and with various types of problems, but the latest episode confirms that the attention to safety is very high on the part of the staff - added Giovanni Villa, regional secretary of the Fns Cisl - Who saves a life deserves the right recognition ".

Just a week ago the judge of the Court of Lanusei, Mariano Arca, had ordered the indictment in the Court of Assizes for Masih. The first hearing in the Court of Assizes was set for next June 29th.
