THE TRAGEDY – That afternoon 28 years ago, a group of bandits preparing to attack an armored car was intercepted by the "gazelle" of the mobile radio unit of the Compagnia di Ozieri, with Carru and Frau on board. The two carabinieri arrived at Pede 'e Semene, near Chilivani, where the suspicious presence of a concrete mixer truck had been reported by the roadside, blocked the driver of the vehicle who was carrying a sawed-off shotgun. While they were arresting him they were overwhelmed by a storm of bullets unleashed by the accomplices stationed nearby. Carru and Frau returned fire trying to defend themselves, but the gang, made up of eight men and armed to the teeth killed them mercilessly .

The robbery of the armored car was foiled and the entire commando was later arrested and convicted.

For their heroic deed Carru and Frau were awarded the gold medal for military valor, in memory.
